George Bush still has veto power over every law that passes through Congress. Since a veto requires a 2/3rds vote in the senate to be overturned, how can the democrats claim to have any new power?

Yes, the country gets a little more liberal, which is bad for everyone.

Bush now has to answer to democrats. Since there is a democratic majority, they can more easily launch investigations into Bush's actions. This cannot be vetoed by the president because investigations are not bills. Bush will not veto everything that comes out of congress, so there are going to be more liberal bills passed than before.

They have subpoena power and can conduct investigations and oversight that the republicans failed to do. The can now spearhead legislation that will benefit more Americans, like fixing Medicare Drug Plan and Lowering interest on Student Loan., Fixing the Alternative Minimum Tax.

Bush isn't going to veto ever Democratic Bill he's concerned about his legacy and getting a republican elected president in 2008.

Yes. Congress makes the laws. Bush can (& I hope will) veto extreme legislatoin, but he won't be able to get reasonable budgets & other needed legislation passed. This Congress will probably conduct so many wild investigations that the executive will be tied up responding to bogus charges.

There are a lot of things they can do, and to top it off, if Bush doesn't cooperate, he will just be hurting the Republicans chances in 2008. However, one thing they should be able to pass is a comprehensive immigration bill, because the Democrats and Bush are on the exact same page. Other than that, can't name anything.

Not only that but in the Senate, Really no one has a majority in the sense of having bills passed strictly across party lines (60 votes typically needed) compared to what the Republicans had.

But they DO have new power, because the "majority" sets the tone of what gets voted, on what schedule they are voted on, what committees are ran by who, etc etc.

As it ends up, none of them will be able to do much of anything, which is always the best government for the people. Clinton ended up with the largest surplus in American history. It's not that he was that great as a president, it's because for 8 years we had a Democrat for a president, and Republicans controlled the house and senate.

Not really. The games will still be played, your taxes will continue to rise and be wasted and you'll still get lied too daily. Same crap, just differnt faces. Politicians are all the same.

Stop wasting your time and energy on these dumb party politics games and spend some time trying to get representation of the people, for the people.

They can block his nominations for court positions. And his nomination to the UN. They don't have really any "power" other than the power to harass the president to get him to capitulate.
