Recently NFL Europe has experimented with a rule that awards four points for any field goal kicked 50 yards or more. Would you welcome or oppose this rule change in the American NFL?

Absolutely ... it would open up a whole new set of possibilities in the game and likely do for the NFL what the 3-point shot did for the NBA.

My hubby and I were just discussing this EXACT scenario yesterday!

I would oppose.

1) The rules are geared to encourage forward progress at all times. With this rule, teams down by 4 (or sometimes down by 3) would discourage teams from gaining too much yardage, as they would lose a point on the field goal attempt if they were too far into their opponents territory.

2) A field goal is half a touchdown, but a touchdown is worth more than two field goals because of the extra point kick. A 4-point field goal would make field goals more valuable, leading to fewer touchdowns, which is the object of the game.

I would much rather see the Canadian Football "rouge", where teams "pay 1 point" for a touchback. A free pass to the 20 yard line should cost something.

I think it would be pretty cool if it was already established. I don't reccomend messing with what i think is already the best sport in the world. It would add an interesting aspect to the game and teams would prob. pick up a kicker that specialized in 50+ yard field goals. So, I would have to say i would oppose it now but in the early years of the NFL it would be a great idea.

I think a better rule change would be to eliminate the PAT and have only a 2 point conversion attempt. Except in limited situations, I don't think 1 point would be enough to influence a coach one way or the other on a 50 plus yard field goal attempt.

I like it just the way they have it. Then that would change stratergies. For instance a team might knee the ball on third down to back up a yard so they could get four points if they have a good kicker. In NFL Europe the kickers aren't that great. So the rule works there.

I think the NFL should replace the standard extra point with the still legal drop kick (which is worth 1 point). I don't think it would be used much anymore. Very few games would be won by a long field goal requiring that extra point.

The rule change I would favor is to take points away for a missed field goal. Perhaps coaches would think twice before settling for the kick.

Like the advent of the three-point shot in basketball (which, as a traditionalist, I hated til I loved it), the four point for over fifty yard field goal is probably a really good idea.

Personally I am against it. I see it as rewarding a team that can't advance the ball further. I understand the thought that well they kicked it that far but still you didn't get it any further so why punish a defense for stopping you.
