i once played a game with harbingers in it. I don't know if its the same but i think it has to do with souls that are trapped, they are sending messages between worlds(living and dead). Like they cannot move on.
But i think u are looking for a dictionary definition,
it means foreshadow, something that tells or incinuates what will happen
