1 1/2 can be written as 3/2. Think of it like this: you have 1 which you can write as 2/2 and then you a half as well. Take that 2/2 and add to it the 1/2 and you get 3/2. Next, convert the 2 4/5 to 14/5. How you ask? The 2 is written as 10/5 (that's because, 10 divided by 5 is 2, and since you can only add fractions that have the same denominator, that is how you should write it. Now you have the equation 3/2 - 14/5. To get the denominators the same, the lowest common denomitor is 10. Mulitply 3/2 times 5 and 14/5 by 2. This now gives you 15/10 - 28/10. Simply subtractions leads you to -13/10 or -1 3/10
