welfare has destroyed the american family. the family is the basic unit of cohesive civilization. destroy it and civilization will not last.
when you give monetary rewards to families when the father leaves, guess what happens? when you give monetary rewards to mothers who have multiple children out of wedlock that they cannot afford, guess what they will do? who suffers? the children. We have grown men who father babies, leave, and have no idea or inkling of what their responsibilities are or how they are supposed to behave because they grew up fatherless themselves.
I propose real welfare reform. I have written my congressmen with this idea. We have been successful at kicking single people off the welfare roles, but the mothers of children still are getting a free ride. Do I propose kicking them off? no. I propse that they be made to do what i had to do when I was single and poor, get a roomate. I say instead of giving a mother a modern comfortable, private apartment at our expense, they be paired up. not only will that decrease costs, it will give the children two parents instead of one. the mothers can take turns babysitting which will save on child care costs. the mothers will then have more time to work on getting out of their situation. If this sounds cuel to some, so what. Welfare shouldn't be a pleasant experience. people should be induced to remove themselves from that situation as soon as they can. I think it would be a posotive step!

searcher, we can put criminals in cells together, why not law abiding mothers? Like i said the projects shouldn't be pleasant.

silia, you can't get a job if you have 5 kids and no skills that would give you enough to pay for the day care. My idea would take care of that. the other mother watches the kids while the first one is working.

Ah, the good ol' myth of the welfare mother.

1. Women do not have children specifically to get more welfare benefits. Welfare pays somewhere around $90 a month per child. Counter that with the cost it takes to feed, clothe, house and provide medical care for that child. It does not make economic sense to have a child in order to get an extra $90. You will be spending more on that child than you are making.

2. Welfare has not "destroyed the American family." The divorce and single parenthood rate among welfare recipients and non-welfare recipients is comparable.

3. You are going to stop fathers from abandoning their children by...punishing the child and the mother? How does making the child and the mother live in overcrowded conditions a la tenements make fathers more responsible for their children?

4. "A modern comfortable, private apartment." Have you actually set foot into public housing?

Wouldn't a smarter thing to do be to have greater access to birth control and safe, legal abortions in poorer areas? Poor areas usually have a dearth of clinics. Wouldn't a smarter thing to do be have sex education that teaches folks how to avoid pregnancy and diseases in school? Wouldn't a smarter thing to be to give incentives to two-parent families on welfare, to fathers who support their children, and penalties to fathers who do not?

Great thought, NEVER happen. It is true that our definition of family has been changed in tjis country, but pairing up welfare mothers is not the answer. The answer is strict time limits on benefits, and more social programs to get these people up and working like the rest of us. I know people here in my state of NY that have been on welfare all of their lives. Recieving one type or another. That is just wrong. But when I someone loses their job for whatever reason, you can't get help, you have to exhaust your unemployment first. The system is screwed up. I also know women who have five or six kids just they can stay on welfare because it's cheaper than paying for the daycare for all five or six kids. When you are single and poor don't get a roomate GET A JOB!

Yes, we should get a welfare reform. Women who have than two children and don't work, shouldn't get welfare. It should only be fore the real disabled that have no way of working and it should only be a low amount. Whatever happend to fiscal responsibility? It's ridiculous to make people dependent on the government and unemployment checks is crap, too. They should be abolished. This is where my tax money is going and I think it's being wasted.

it is costing this country more than the billions of dollars a year.
ti is costing the country its dignity and it is perpetuating the welfare families from the inception of the program until today.
it has weakened our country and the people..
it needs to go back to the beginning and why to was started..to give immediate help to families that need money and medical and food fast...not to make a new life style and keep generations of families on it for ever..
it needs to STOP as we now know it..and go back to the beginning...standing in lines to get your military surplus food, cheese, meat, peanut butter and so forth.with a little ( small ) amount of food stamps ( called food stamps specific ) meaning they can only be used for specific food items...
like i said this is costing America more then just the billions of the workers tax money..much much more..
time is now..this year have you congress do it..now we can...write them letters and tell them what you all want...

good luck

In theory, this does sound like a positive situation. But take this issue into consideration.

Have you ever been to the projects? What happens when you place people into a small area that might not like each other?

Not a good situation.

Instead, I'd like to see programs designed to help get people off of welfare, including job training.

Good idea. People should be encouraged to get off welfare.

How dare you ask people to take responsibility for their own condition!!!!!

You are violating the very core of liberal philosophy!!!!

I think that there is a lot of wisdom in what you wrote.

Thank you for some logical ideas.
(But watch out! You are going to be attacked by Democrats. You are stepping on their welfare feet.)
Good Question.
