Those little white marks that sometimes appear as dots or lines on the fingernail are known as leukonychia. They can have a variety of causes, including mild trauma, a fungal infection, skin conditions, or nutritional deficiencies. Usually they are caused by a minor zinc deficiency which is not serious.
These sites should help.

Those are marks that show you that you are lacking in Calcium. They show up on your nails as your nails and teeth are formed from calcium. So, I would suggest that you do something about it like drinking more fresh milk.. :)

I asked my manicurist:
They are NOT because of calcium deficiency, they are calcium deposits. This means you have too much calcium (which is a GOOD thing) and that your body is storing it in your nails until it needs it. Hope this helps.

Whenever I get white marks it is because they get bent back "accidentally". Very painful. Not pleasant.

You need calcium. Anything your body needs or has too much of can manifest in your fingernails. It's cool.
