I have located the California Mechanical Code online booklet. Maybe you should browse that to get the correct answer to your question. Never trust another builder's judgement when doing a job yourself, everyone has their own way of install or build.

Use the installation instruction manual that comes with it. This is what the code enforcement will go by. The manufacturers listing has been tested and approved. Be sure to follow anything specific for California. It will be listed as an amendment to the standard installation.
