I ran across a report by William Bullock Clark and Edward Bennett Mathews in the Maryland Geological Survey, volume 8, published in Baltimore by Johns Hopkins Press in 1909 that described the kinds of clays used by Maryland brickmakers that was common of brick "found everywhere throughout the Coastal Plain" (p. 110). It is kind of complicated but maybe you can find it on Google Books.
