Thanks for the quick responses so the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ is better then the pentuim d? and whats so significant from the fsb from 800mHz to the amd's 2000Mhz which is more importand ghz of cpu speed or the FSB? and does anyone know where i can but a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ & mothbrd combo?

i would go for a atholon 64 x2 even with a lower frequency. It's perfect for everything and has high overclocking cappabylities. and dont look at the 2.40ghz think in many casses it's not all about the frequency. AMD stopped a long time to beat intel at frequency.. instead they added the "+" thing in naming theyr's products; amd + are considered to have the same performance of better with intell at the same rating. and the fsb for intel or amd .. it's another trick .. it's actually 100 or 200 multiplied with an number. Go for an amd . the mainboard it's cheaper, cpu it's cheaper ...have some good ram a good dvd burner and u should'nt have any problems ..ever.

I have an AMD Sempron 3000+ which is perfectly decent enough for internet and office use and even a few halfway-decent games with a decent GFX card.

I have a socket 754 mobo and the CPU is 74 (obviously) and a good setup, cheap as well. I got mine for £120 for mobo + CPU but I'm sure there cheaper now, if you get a mobo with less features.

An X2 4800 is nearly twice as fast as a 3.4 Ghz Pentium D. That's why Intel has stopped making Pentium D's, and is selling them so cheaply.

You already know what you are doing. The Athlon X2 is as fast as any Intel part and consumes way less power, so your box doesn't get cooked.

I just ordered six X2 4800+ boxes with 2Gb of RAM for my team.

Intel Pentium Extreme
Sorry I'm not fan of AMD.
Anyways, for browsing internet and "some" pentium 4 3 GHz will do, for that you don't need core duo

nicely, do not recognize a lot about AMD yet for Intel the quads are not as solid as duals yet they're rather close. i might want to flow with the quad for destiny information as many applications will commence taking income of all cores. do not flow the middle i7 course because it sucks for gaming that is extra for video enhancing/processing. Plus, you'll ought to get a clean motherboard and RAM.
