Hockey is for real athletes and competitors....fighting in hockey isn't fighting just to fight...as emotional a sport as hockey is fighting is usually used to spark a team and get your fans and teammates rallied up. Sometimes fighting occurs to send a message to the opposing team or player in particular. By no means is hockey a "retarded sport" , it's just not like others where you can be a cockey **** talker and get away with it. If your going to run your mouth on the ice you should be able to back yourself up because it's not like football or basketball where opposing players sissy slap each other uncontrolabally. That pretty much sums it up.

The refs let them fight because it's A.) part of the game and B.) It's part of what fans pay to see.

Most fights aren't nearly as serious as they may look to a layman--which you obviously are as no hockey fan would ever ask this question. :-).

Can people get hurt? Yeah, but rarely due to fighting. Most fights are between players that are more or less known for it. It's rare to see a non-fighter get into it with another player. There are players on most teams that have the purpose of kind of enforcing things on the ice.

Refs can and do get involved if things escalate. But most NHL'ers have the decency to lay off once they've won. You won't see someone just pummeled.

Before you lay the "retarded" label on--you should take some time to learn and enjoy the sport. MacTavish layed the retarded label on a ref last week and got a $10,000 fine. Really an ugly word when you think about it.

Hope you're reading these answers and coming away a bit enlightened.

I'm guessing that you've never played the game. If you had, you'd know that most fights end without even one serious punch landing from either fighter. It's tough to get a lot of momentum and strength behind your punches when you're being pulled off-balance on skate blades.

Even with those guys who fight all the time, I can't think of a single case of brain damage caused by hockey fights. And I'm again surprised by the stupidity of the questions on here by people who know absolutely nothing about certain sports.

Thats what makes hockey different from all the other sports. You can fight. Plus the player wear helmets. How can they get brain damage. All they do is punch each other, grab each others jerseys and try to wrestle the other player to the ground.

because hockey fights is why a lot of people go to see hockey...if not it would be kinda dull...except heckling the stupid refs and the bad players on the other team. also, the refs don't let them fight long enough tocause any real damage...unless your the guy who got beat up by my team once and made his eye bleed...that was terrific! additionally, you used the wrong punctuation at the end of your sentence...because if that was a question i would say that hockey is not a retarded sport. also check out this fight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNkLyUWzHdI - this is why hockey rocks. GO STORM! Finally, if you don't like it there are other sports to watch.

Heres the deal. Its not because it is part of the game "part of the game" it is not because "the fans pay to see it" it is because these players weigh in above 200 pounds and are over 6 feet. If your a ref you do not want to get in between to huge professional athletes who could "KIll you"(not literally) especially on skates where the mechanics of fighting are a lot harder. Plus once they fought it out its a lot easy to get them to the penalty box, it probably takes less time to let them fight it out then to force them into the box.

I don't watch hockey any more, it's boring without the hitting. Watching guys skate around like sissys doesn't do it for me. Where are the hard checks, the hitting, the, uh, yes, flighting?

I pretty much agree with everyone the posted to this one. Hockey is such an underrated sport.

If you don't like it.. go watch something else like everyone else and let those who appreciate it play and enjoy. Don't insult a sport because you don't agree with it.. How uninformed you are anyway.
