i'd make sure the pilot for my hot water heater is lit, the pilot is a little blue flame under your tank - it should be fairly easy to tell if its lit or not- if its not lit you should smell gas fumes and before u re-light it i'd open the garage door to let some of those fumes out

If you have a gas water heater, there is an inspection place you can remove and see if you have a blue pilot light. If you don't see it, it need relit.
If you feel uncomfortable dealing with gas, I suggest you call the appliance repair of your choice to relight it for you. There could be any number of reasons why the pilot went out in the first place, and you certainly need to know what happened.
You know, so it won't happen again.
If you have an electric heater, the most likely problem is the element has burned out, and needs replaced.
I definately would seek professional help here because you are dealing with water & electric. Not a good mix.

Gas water heater? Pilot light out? Electric heater? Element?

assuming your hot water heater is gas

is the pilot light on? ( is it lit with a flame?)
is the gas turned on to the heater?
do you have the temperature turned up on the heater or is it set to 'off'?

you may need to call someone on this one if the above does not help
