It's someone who assists a very busy executive or office team with the running of an office when they are too swamped to get it all done. It entails, but is not limited to answering phones, typing letters, filing, sheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, and sometimes handling the budget, ordering supplies, taking minutes or handling human resource issues like payroll and timecards.
It can be a great fit if you have a boss that treats you like a member of the team. It can be a drag if they see you as a slave-girl.

You will be doing all the pleb jobs around the office. A little bit of everything, so a bit like a P.A., a little like a secretary, a gopher.

It should be basic things like filing, typing, writing up minutes of meetings. Being a secretary to the boss. Mostly the little fiddly jobs that no one else wants to do. Maybe even organising people's travels. Sometimes even going down the street to get coffee for everyone. If you are lucky, you get to use the company car to drive stuff to other offices. I didn't mind doing that - i got to get out of the office and drive (someone else's) car _fast_. I made it fun for me.

But this is a good entry level type job. Gives you a chance to try a bit of this and that. If you are efficient in your work and have extra time left over, talk to your supervisor about getting more work of the type you like. you can mold the job into what you want.

I am an executive administrative assistant at a multi-million dollar company.

I book all of the meetings on my boss' calendar. I also work with his kids' school schedules, and connect with his wife regarding important personal time, in order to avoid conflicts here at the office.

I plan his travel, and process his expense reports. I also handle the approval of his employees' expense reports, along with their travel requests.

I field calls to his office, and screen his email for action items or critical messages.

I work with his staff to ensure that any action items requested by him are completed in a timely fashion.

I assist in preparing any presentations or other data he may need for meetings.

I plan his meetings - including off sites with internal employees and external contacts. Included in this is arranging hotel rooms, banquet rooms, catering, and travel arrangements.

Hmmm...I'm sure there's more. I think this covers the basics, though.

If you're gonna do it, be sure you like the boss...It's a partnership, and if you can't get along well, it just won't work.
