I have a Toshiba Tecra laptop running Windows 2000. It doesn't work with an external mouse so I am only using the one on the keyboard. Lately the cursor will only move left and right, which of course is no good. I have tried uninstalling the driver for the OS/2 mouse, Sometimes the mouse will work for a few minutes if I can the mouse setting in the BIOS from Auto to Simultaneuos. What can I do to fix this once and for all?

Firstly I don't see why an external mouse will not work. I believe that Toshiba lets you plug in a PS2 mouse (do so before you turn it on). What you did not say is if it is a glide pad or a track ball (I am not familier with that model). If it is a track ball - they can be removed and cleaned easily. If it is a glide pad I don't have any suggestions.

get rid of the ball on the backside of the mouse via twisting the plastic cover counter-clockwise. you will see 3 cylindrical plastic rollers that help the ball flow mutually as staying in place. you will possibly see lots of junk that has accumulated on those rollers. Use tweezers, a toothpick, your fingernail, or fantastically lots something to get rid of that gunk. be sure you're no longer forcing the gunk to come returned off, in case you're careful you could pull of the layer of airborne dirt and dirt without warning. After making confident all 3 are sparkling, positioned the ball decrease back interior the distant and guard it via rotating the plastic cover clockwise. Viola! (except you have an optical mouse with out ball, if so purchase a sparkling one)

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
