My husband's dad was born with the last name "smith" but his parents soon divorced and he changed his name when he turned 18 to "Johnson" because he was raised by a man with that last name. Grandpa "Smith" was out of the pic for a while, but not by choice. He is now back and active in our lives but our name remains "Johnson." Grandpa "Johnson" was abusive and currently out of the pic. My husband and I are pregnant w/ our first and would like to give the baby the "Smith" name, but ours is still "Johnson." Eventually we want to change it, but don't have enough time before baby comes. Can we name the baby "Smith" and have our name "Johnson"?

I am sure you can name your baby what ever you want
but you should start the process of changing your last name as soon as possible even if the baby is boarn before
you should also be concern about the insurance comp
sent them a letter, because you never know with them they might just decide not to pay for the baby care after the birth because
of the name
(just in case)
Good luck

Yes, you can make up a last name, pick a last name.....anything you want to. The nurses at the hospital even told us that because they asked what our daughter's last name would be and I was puzzled by the question. I did look into it a little because I thought maybe I misunderstood, and sure enough...there is NO difference by state, that baby can have whatever you want him/her to have! Good Luck!

In most states you can name your baby whatever you want, Donald Duck if you feel inclined. However, be prepared to explain why he has a different last name when he's old enough to figure it out.
