Perhaps, if you have used a more mature reply than "No way" and had given him a legitimate reason why you couldn't work late, he would have responded differently, but I doubt it.

Obviously this person is into verbal abuse which involves name-calling, put-downs, blaming, criticizing, or something as overt as yelling or as subtle as rolling eyeballs.

This particular sceniario sounds as if each was responsible for what happened, but that does not negate the fact that you were verbally abused.

You could report him to his superior, but always remember that with people with this type of volatile and immature personaility, you may experience some unpleasant behavior (backlash) and possibly be putting yourself in danger.

It is obvious, IMHO, that your boss has some anger issues that he needs to deal with.

Report him.

well, to be honest with you, you should take that directly to your human resources department right away, like right now, before it goes any further. A boss with this kind of behavior needs to be seriously repremanded or demoted immediately. If you dont have a HR department then go to his boss and let that person know how offended you are by the statements that your boss has made to you. If his behavior doesnt improve then I would see an attorney or the labor board right away and discuss your options.

Maybe it's because I am older, and have worked for 25+ years, but I view it a little different.

It's just a (rather crude)expression, sort of like " F - You and the horse you rode in on"-
usually said jokingly. It kind of depends on how he said it.

He definitely does not mean anything about your mother or any insult to her.

I would guess he was joking?

If it really bothers you, ask him why he said it, tell him it bothered you and see what he says...Good luck, sounds like at the very least his judgement is not too stellar :-)

I would just let it roll off my back, laugh it off-

Yes, I would be extremely upset!! That's NO way to treat an employee, it's one thing if he just yelled at YOU but to include your mother like that is simply unacceptable. I would report him to HIS boss if possible! Don't let him treat you like that, that's messed up!

Sounds to me like he was having a bad day and needs anger management classes. What he said was completely out of line. Yes, I would be upset about it, but don't think about it too much. No use letting someone being grouchy ruin your day.

When a boss asks you if you want to work late you say yes. Or you explain why you can't. You should learn how to interact with your boss and have him be more cival.

I'd be upset if my boss was that tightly wound. He must have really needed something done, but if it was something he was just trying to pawn off on you because he didn't manage his time wisely and efficiently it's his problem.
