I understand and agree that people should not have a free ride and that there are abuses of the system. But not everyone on welfare is a bum.
Are you in favor or programs that would provide educational assistance towards associate and bachelor-degree programs, low-cost childcare and transportation assistance?
If you hate welfare programs, are you in support of programs that will help parents get to a level of self-sufficiency?
What types of programs should be there for parents who do not have the mental or intellectual ability to continue education, or live in a rural area where there is no public transportation and they do not drive?

Peaches, if you read my profile, you will see that I'm going to school to help not only my family but other women overcome barriers to employment. I ask these questions to help me learn various mindsets of individuals.

There are programs that offer education help and child care assistance and travel assistance. The thing about welfare is that if the people who used it didn't abuse it and honestly used it to get back on their feet then it wouldn't be an issue. I was on Cash Aid and Food Stamps after I left an abusive relationship. I was a single mom of a 7 year old with one on the way and moved from VA to CA to get away from the most eveil man I have ever met. I had always said that welfare is bad and should be abolished UNTIL I needed it and was grateful that it was there. I did exactly what I was suppose to do: They make you attend classes and help you find a job. I stayed on the assistance long enough to get back on my feet then I cut the benefits off (only about a year). My case worker said that even though they have tons of rules and regulations and safe guards there are still people who abuse the system which makes it hard or impossible for the people who actually need it to get it. I don't think its fair to just say that our government is gonna cut everyone off and no assistance at all because there are people who don't use it right. My dads girlfriend is in England and on all types of welfare and every assistance you can image yet she doesn't work and just lives of my dad who is here in the states - now that is wrong!!
I wonder what all the people who are totally against welfare would do if they came to a point in their lives when everything gets turned upside down and they have to do what they have to to feed their children and provide a roof over their head. Would they take the assistance they have so admittly said they hate or would let their kids starve? You just dont know until something like that happens. 3 years ago, I would never had thought I'd be in a position to need assistance but it helped me get a job (and paid for daycare until I could afford it)
Here in CA, if you arent disabled and can work you have to have at least 32 hours a week of some sort of work related education/job search/work etc. I wonder how these people can abuse the system - even though I was doing everything they asked and more they were on me so very hard... wanted pay stubs and updates from my boss. All that made me work even harder to get to a point when I could just live and not worry about handing in my pay stubs to them everyt other month.
To all those people who say its time for men to step up and take care of kids and for women to stop having kids they cant afford: Nice theory but reality is some men will continue to make promises and support their family then leave (or become an abusive jerk), women will get pregnant by those guys, we will make a bad decision that put us in the most unwanted of situations regardless if welfare is around or not.

educational assistance towards associate and bachelor-degree programs....what about the millions and millions of working people who can not afford this for themselves never mind their children's education..why should anyone get a free ride for college when the rest have to do without or take second jobs to try and make it through collage??? no college ....
and what happened in Minnesota when Jessy the body Ventura started a program just like this there??? child care, food medical for the families while ( mostly females ) but mom and or dads went for training so they could get good jobs and get off welfare...the people int he training would quit, and quitting caused you to lose your benefits...and the education program ( just like what you are saying now ) crashed and burned ..because the people on the welfare did not want to do the training and get regular jobs...so the state is right back to where it was before he was governor....not better but worse..
so why didn't a program just like what your saying work....?because it was all just handed to people....when someone really works hard for something..even if is is a bike..they appreciate it much more..than a gift just given to you...
so what is the answer to this problem..I am not sure...but they need out help...they deserve much better than they are getting ...
so lets think and solve it..there are many great minds on here..
good luck

I would definitely support a program that would provide educational assistance, low-cost childcare and transportation assistance. I have no problem with giving someone a hand up, but I have a huge problem with giving someone a hand out. Big difference! I would rather see tax dollars helping someone who is working a low-income job make ends meet than to pay someone to sit on their butt.
I think that there are programs in place for the mentally handicapped/challenged - at least there are here in Alaska. As to rural areas, I have no suggestions. Most Alaskan villages are not on the road system - talk about your transportation problems!

The only purpose of a welfare program is to help people get on their feet. Anybody unwilling to work deserves exactly what they earn and nothing more. Sounds cold hearted? Not at all. The majority would quickly become willing to work after skipping a few meals although some actually prefer to panhandle. I have no problem with panhandling wither, so long as that is their personal choice. I'm not willing to allow people to starve so I would like to see communities developed with the soel purpose of helping welfare recipients. It would only provide the basic necessities and nothing more. People would have every opportunity to learn a skill or trade and would be given placement assistance.
Those who do not have the ability to work and earn a living would be a seperate case but I doubt that they actually comprise more than a small fraction of a percent of the current welfare recipients in this country. They would certainly need to be cared for, how many of the current welfare recipients could be gainfully employed providing service to those unable to work?

welfare has destroyed the american family. the family is the basic unit of cohesive civilization. destroy it and civilization will not last.
when you give monetary rewards to families when the father leaves, guess what happens? when you give monetary rewards to mothers who have multiple children out of wedlock that they cannot afford, guess what they will do? who suffers? the children. We have grown men who father babies, leave, and have no idea or inkling of what their responsibilities are or how they are supposed to behave because they grew up fatherless themselves.
I propose real welfare reform. I have written my congressmen with this idea. We have been successful at kicking single people off the welfare roles, but the mothers of children still are getting a free ride. Do I propose kicking them off? no. I propse that they be made to do what i had to do when I was single and poor, get a roomate. I say instead of giving a mother a modern comfortable, private apartment at our expense, they be paired up. not only will that decrease costs, it will give the children two parents instead of one. the mothers can take turns babysitting which will save on child care costs. the mothers will then have more time to work on getting out of their situation. If this sounds cuel to some, so what. Welfare shouldn't be a pleasant experience. people should be induced to remove themselves from that situation as soon as they can. I think it would be a posotive step!

The issue of welfare programs is actually more complicated than issues between deadbeats and people really in need or between people who have more compassion as opposed to those who have less compassion for the poor.
While it is necessary for the government to collect a small amount of taxes in order to carry out those duties enumerated to the governmental branches, they should collect no more than what is required to carry out those duties.
Money is power. Every time we allow the government to extend their power beyond the limitations of the U.S. Constitution we give up some of our power. When we give up power to the government we risk losing our freedoms.
The following goes for all welfare programs whether food stamps, TANF, medicare, social security, and educational programs including public schools.
The Constitution specifically places the power to make laws (Congress) and enforce laws (President) into the hands of elected officials. The implementation of welfare programs has led to the formation of numerous government agencies run by non-elected officials who now both make and enforce laws. Thus our right to participate in choosing the leaders who decide whether to maintain or deny us our freedoms has been taken away.
The founding of our nation was based upon the concept of accepting responsibility for and take on the risks involved in decision making. In exchange, the people were to be allowed (among other things) to choose how to earn and spend their income, where to live, how to raise and educate their children and the right to believe in one God, many Gods or no God.
When a system of income redistribution (aka progressive taxation) is implemented it denys Americans who are more successful the right to spend their money in the way they choose and punishes them for being successful. It also rewards less successful people for their lack of success.
This is not to say that people with the means to do so have no obligation to help the poor, but that it is an obligation of consience rather than a one of law.
I could give you more reasons but the subject is really just too big for this forum.

Welfare program is a great program as it is, intended for people in need, there is also a self-sufficiency program that needs to be enforced, also we should enforce a term limit and help people in welfare get back to be productive members of society.

WELFARE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A MEANS TO AN END. BUT UNFORTUNETLEY IT HAS BECOME A MEANS WITH NO END IN SIGHT. TOO MUCH FRAUD. I SAY SHUT IT DOWN AND TRY SOMETHING NEW. I DON'T KNOW WHAT, BUT IT'S A DRAIN ON THE TAX PAYING PUBLIC. IF THEIR WERE NO GOVERNMENT HANDOUT PEOPLE WOULD THINK A LITTLE LONGER BEFORE PUTTING THEMSELVE IN A SITUATION WHERE THEY HAVE TO ASK FOR HELP. IT'S TIME FOR MEN TO STEP UP AND TAKE CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN AND IT'S TIME FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T AFFORD IT TO STOP HAVING SO MANY KIDS.

i would not support paying for someone else's education , no one paid for mine . I would support low-cost childcare so these parents can get to work though , that is a great idea . I don't have a problem helping those that can't help themselves - the children . As far as your last paragraph , if they are recieving free money make them work for it , surely they wouldn't complain . There are many things they can do in the community to pay off their debt .

Obviously you have a computer - there a tons of educational courses you can take over the Internet... and my social agencies support them. Ask and find out... I have no qualms for or against Welfare - we all pay for it - there are far more serious social problems for our society to deal with these days, before there isn't a society to worry about.
