Depending on the type of sediment the sedimentary rock is composed, it is all a matter of time, and pressure. As the pressure of natural geologic process takes place, over a vast amount of time the metamorphosis occurs, thus creating metamorphic rock(i.e. granite) from sedimentary rock(i.e. sand stone).

Heat, pressure, and--this one is often missed--chemically-active fluids, such as mineral-rich water. By the by, sometimes only one or two of these happen at a time--for instance, heat alone can metamorphize a rock, as can pressure alone.
