Your sound card probably still works. Win 9x seems to occasionally kick-out device drivers, especially sound and video. Did this computer come with recovery CD's?--I'm thinking no, because few computers made in 2001 came with '98. If you have a separate CD for your sound card then simply re-install the drivers. You can also see that it has a problem by Right clicking on my computer, then Device Manager -- if you see an exclamation mark next to it - click onto it. It will say the device has a conflict or that the device drivers aren't installed, click on Re-install drivers and have it search drive C: or Option Cabs. If you know the cards maker and model, get the latest drivers from their web site. Best of Luck!

Before you run of to the store or start reinstalling drivers: check your speakers!
I've been called on several occassions where people had the same problem as you did: no sound. In one case, they had disconnected the speakers to move the computer, but put the cable back in the wrong outlet. In another case, it turned out that one of the users of the computer found all the noise the computer made annoying, so she had turned the speakers off. In a third case, someone did move the computer without disconnecting the speakers, so they got disconnected when they moved the computer.
So once again: check your speakers. If you can: hook them up to a different computer to be on the safe side: that way you'll know if you might just need a new soundcard, or new speakers as well...

If re-installing the drivers does not help get the sound back, then a new sound card may be what is needed.

If you don't have your sound card drivers, perhaps you can download them from the net. If you don't know what sound card you have follow these steps:

Right click on My Computer
Go To Properties
Go To Hardware tab
Go To Device Manager
Expand Sound, Video and Game controllers
Find your Audio Controller's name

Search for that on the net and you should be able to download the drivers.

Good Luck

Try rebooting it. My laptop did that and I rebooted it and it worked again. And also try checking the wires on the back of the CPU. The sound one might have come loose or came out. After that go to a prof. And maby try getting XP. That is a pretty old system. But not unless you think it's necessary. Because that can get expensive.

Try re-installing the drivers for your sound card. If that doesn't get it going, then it probably needs to be replaced. You might want to upgrade that O.S. as well since it is no longer supported.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
