My oven decided to stop working the other day. It worked fine one day and then not so fine the next. The stovetop is gas - does that mean the oven uses gas too? Could it be a pilot light? I don't want to have to call a repair guy. Can someone please guide me in the right direction?

Is there an element in it that turns red when it was working? If so, it's electrical and there would be fuses installed somewhere on the range, most likely along the top panel. Twist each one counter clockwise until it comes out and have a look inside it. If any of them appear black or very foggy inside, it probably has blown. Note the amperage on it. It should be either 20 or 30 or some such number. Go to the hardware store or department store and get a replacement. Good luck!

If the top has pilots there is a good chance the oven does also. Pull out the bottom pan under the oven racks and look to see if there is something standing facing the burner, that would be the pilot. If it were out though, you would notice a gas smell. Sometimes the timer controls get bumped or turned accidentally, that would cause the oven not to light too. I really doubt you have a pilot though, you might have a glow coil or an arching mechinism I don't knnow what type of stove you have but they could be bad. You would only have one type. If they are bad you need to call someone and plan to spend a $100 anyway.

The oven is probably gas too. Where I am from, the gas company will make free courtesy/inspection calls for gas flow issues. Try your local utility company, a phone call won't hurt. Some utility companies do repairs as well for a reasonable rate.

The oven is most likely gas if the stove top is. I would say it is the igniter, we just had the same thing go on ours,it worked one day and the next nothing. I would check that first.

If the oven is not a electronic ignition. Check to see if the pilot went out.
