First, it is best to avoid getting any effected surface wet. This is especially important on metal surfaces; door knobs, fixtures, cabinet handles... Water will combine with soot to form a mild acid that will pit the metals.

Smoke/soot from a fire are best cleaned off walls first without the use of any liquids. Professionals use something called a "dry cleaning sponge" that is very porous and will remove the soot without smearing it on the walls:

After all effected surfaces have been cleaned with the dry cleaning sponge the walls can then be washed. The odor will most likely go away after a good cleaning. If not ozone is the best final touch for any lingering odor. Ask among your friends and you will eventually find one that owns an air purifier that produces ozone, run it in your bathroom at max out-put over night. If you know some with a commercial grade ozone generator a few minutes is all that will be needed.

I would suggest using TSP (tri-sodium phosphate), making sure to following the directions on the container. It can be found in both liquid and powder form. This is also a good cleaner for prepping before painting as it will remove dust and oils from surfaces.

Someone told me to use a cleaner that contains orange oil.

I found it in the automotive department at WalMart.

It removes the smoke and odor.
