After watching the Bears/Giants Sunday Night game, I was really surprised to see the Bears once take back a botched field goal for a touchdown almost a year after Vasher did it the year before. However, I had a question, since Hester fielded the ball in his own endzone, would his only choice be to get the touchback or take it out? Because, if the field goal was left alone, the Bears would have had the ball at about their own 35. (btw I'm a Bears fan!)

According to the Chicago Tribune, The Bears acutally would have got the ball at the Giants line of scrimmage (about the 35) if he caught it and downed it in his own endzone, so it isn't a traditional touchback in that sense, so there was really no risk in at least fielding the ball.

They would of had the ball from where the ball was kicked at the 42. but once the ball is kicked it is fair game and if it doesn't make it the defensive can do what they want with it if the ball is still in play, that is.The team that kicked can not do anything to the ball unless the defensive team touches the(the same way a punt is treated) yes Hester could of stood there , but that was a designed play..i bet after last nite more teams are going to pay attention to that.. especially the team that plays the the BEARS in the future!!!(BEAR fan also)

This was asked a little earlier but to explain again. You have to CATCH the ball, if it hits the ground it is dead. Different rule when blocked but that is another story. Now when he caught it he put it back in play. If he couldn't field it then it becomes a touchback and a mistake. Catching it negates the kick and basically turns it into a punt return.

If the ball is fielded in the end zone, unless he fumbles the ball, nothing can happen but a return or a touchback.

if they miss and it's in play, and you catch it, you can return it. where ever the return ends is where they get field position
