a smaller electric guitar (i.e. mustang sized) is quite ideal to begin on, because the neck is a bit thinner than usual, and the fretboard is nice and compact (easier to make those bar chords). from there, build up your strength and start playing classical (thinner neck, nylon strings easier to manipulate) or regular acoustic (generally thicker neck, steel strings).
for singing and playing, start off simple. i always was able to satisfy myself by playing nirvana songs. never too complicated, melodies usually went right along with the guitar, nice and easy. as for overall alternative/rock singing tips...listen to the greats. patti smith, kim gordon, kim deal, joan jett, janis, aretha, and get a feel. try not to repeat yourself. ever. and go out and actually sing! you know, for comprising of more than half the population, you females only put out about 20% of the music in this world. now go out there and do it!

I took a class at our local park, once a week for an hour
The instructor also gave me private 45 minutes per week. She was also my oldest adopted sister so I got special attention.I did that for 3 months while taking guitar glass in jr. hi. My first guitar was a folk guitar because it had nylong strings which are much easier on beginner fingers. It had a wider neck than a steel stringed one so I learned to stretch my hands and fingers out so when I got a steel string guitar which has a smaller neck it was easy to play.It is frustrating even with those nylon strings because you have to get your fingers toughened up before you can actually enjoy playing. If you have never played before, beginner lessons are key to not getting frustrated trying to figure it out on your own. Once you have the basics down, then you can pretty much figure out the rest. As far as vocals go, I have been singing since I could talk, a natural if you will, so I never needed too much training but I enjoyed singing so much, I always chose every singing group in jr hi and hi school. You should check out ksolo.com or any of the online karaoke sites to bounce your voice off others and see how you sound. It's a lot of fun. You could listen to me if you want to. I am one of the better trained voices on there. . One of my best songs is Goodnight Sweeheart. Good luck and do try to learn. You will be glad you did. I have been playing a Martin Acoustic 12 string for 31 years.

A good guitar to start on is just any electric (or acoustic, if that's what you want) guitar you can find at a local music store. My first guitar costed around $200 I think, and your first guitar doesn't have to cost even that much, even though that's cheap for an electric guitar. As far as the vocal thing goes, if you don't want to take singing lessons to help you learn how to sing, what I did was just sing along with a bunch of rock songs when you listen to them and try to imitate the lead singer's voice, it helps you learn how to make your own voice sound like that. That's what I do, at least!

I learned on a Washburn, but I can't remember the exact series. it was basically their starter series, it cost around $350. I'd say to buy a guitar that is actually a good guitar, but don't buy something too expensive. A good guitar will help you keep the passion to learn, while a piece of crap from Wal-Mart will just make you feel like you bought something that doesn't matter.
I learned using Mel Bay's guitar chord book. It shows you all of the chords and different arrangements. I started using Harmony-central.com after I learned the basic major and minor chords so I could play some songs. Online, there is a site called Chordie.com that gives you the chord arrangement on the right side and is very easy to understand. Make sure you learn to play some songs early on, otherwise you will become bored with it.

Not sure about singing...but

The best guitar books are by an author Bruce Arnold. He has an e-book you can buy off amazon called "The Essentials." This is a great way to start off. It teaches you the two most common scales, and all the basic chords. You can also print the book. Hope this helps. You can also find his books on www.muse-eek.com The other great thing about buying books by Bruce Arnold is that if you have a question about something you are learning, he will answer you. He helped me find the right books for learning lead when I emailed him and even gave me a practice schedule.

Ok. I've been playing for 12 years now. I can't stress this enough....LEARN ON AN ACOUSTIC! they are a little harder to play (you have to press down harder, and they are harder to play cleanly) I learned by using guitar world magazine, by looking at the tabs (guitar tablature) if you don't know what that is i suggest picking one up and learning it (it's much easier than reading music) as for vocals, get some ear plugs and sing along (loudly) to your favorite tracks and match the pitch of the singer or notes. and practice nonstop. I would practice till my fingers bled and then keep going till it hurt too much to play any longer....then i'd wait an hour and do it again.

First you need to really want it. You can't just give up when your fingers hurt and you cant expect to learn nothing big fast..it takes time. vocals..in my opinion you can't be taught to sing..you need to naturally have somthing to start with.
