Natural vs. Synthetic?

I have to write a persuasive paragraph on the following question:
What should be the job of a scientist?
Pick one to argue:
a) Create more synthetic substances. Fore example: synthetic elements, genetically modified food
b) Study substances that naturally exist.

I pick natural substances, but have no idea what to write

I personally think all substances are natural. Think about it. Were do we get the substances to produce those 'synthetics'? We use elements and compound found here on earth. So they are made from natural substances. Nature has provided us with the ability for those things to combine.

You could try something like the following:

Explain the benefits of studying existing fauna or wildlife to better understand naturally occurring chemicals, while not introducing new artificial materials that we may not properly understand, or which could be harmful to our environment.

Perhaps use an example of a plant or animal species that has become extinct or are threatened due to syntehtic substances, or one that we have learned to emulate or have benefited from.
