I guess it depends on how difficult you want to make the quiz--in terms of what your students are like. If it is just a matter of spitting out the five types, sure have them write the patterns down. But being able to recognize the types in terms of the use in sentences is something else. With that type, the matching would be the easiest. Next step up would be underlining a word in the sentence and asking what it is doing. Choices: a) action verb b)direct object ) c)subject d) indirect object. I sent my mother some flowers. If you underlined mother, the correct answer would be indirect object, showing an understanding of the S+P+IO+DO pattern. Prepositional phrases in sentences to be analysed should be avoided because most students will mistake the object of the prep for something else. Finally, asking them to create sentences and label the embedded patterns would be the most difficult.

Give boxes one containing like nouns/pronouns, one with verbs and one with other "filler" words. Have the kids make sentences using those words following the structure you've taught them.

give them a sheet of paper asking them to write down the five types. then grade them on it. if they're right, give them full credit. if they have some right and some wrong, give them partial credit. if they have them all wrong, give them no credit.

I would ask people to write down what they are. And then grade them on it.
