I just saw an opinion poll on CNN.com and 56% of the people who voted said they wouldn't go to the memorial. Why?

People are ignorant of the contribution Dr. King made to this country. What they don't realize is that Dr. King worked to set all people free regardless of race or gender. Think of it this way.
You are a white male business owner and the year is 1963. You need to hire a manager to run the business for you. You narrow the applicants down to two people, a white male and a black male. You carefully review their education and experience and after interviewing both candidates, your instinct and business sense tells you that the black candidate is the best man for the job and you really want to hire him. You realize that if you hire the black gentleman, your white customers will be offended and probably won't patronize your business and the Klan will be harassing and threatening you, both at the business and at home. What do you do? If you are like the majority of people in 1963, you hire the white man even though he is not as qualified or able as the black man. Dr. King fought for civil rights for black people and he made the rest of us realize that black people are just as intelligent, able and willing to contribute positively to society as any other race. I fear the reason people wouldn't visit his memorial is because of racism and ignorance. If Dr. King were alive today, he would say that much progress has been made in civil rights and race relations but there is still a long way to go and much work yet to be done.

Perhaps because he was a Religious leader and a Cultural Leader. Also, A Great Civil Rights Leader....But, Not a National Leader.

I admired the Late Dr. Martin Luther King and I met him personally. He was a Great Speaker and much of this county's Civil Rights Legislation was enacted by the Ideals of Dr. King.

However, Some opponents say King did not deserve his own holiday ... Several southern states include celebrations for various Confederate generals on that day.

Follow this link for more detailed information on why many people will not celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Day.

mmmmh, I wish I could come up with something a bit more creative, but I'm afraid it's just good old racism. A lot of people just can't see why a black man with a message aimed at other black people is worth enough for that site. It's all the more reason why the memorial should and must be there.

People seem to forget the negatives in King's life. His civil rights activities may have been commendable but deep down there were many less than favorable events in His life that mar the good things he did. He may deserve a memorial in his home town but does not deserve to have a tribute in a national arena like Washington DC.

I hadn't seen that poll. I admit I'm a little shocked. I can think of no other reason than racism.
