I think 4 years old is way to old. I would say 12-18 months the most.

When the child decides to stop breastfeeding. 18 months, 2 years, 4 years, it depends upon the needs of the child. Our society pushes early weaning because of women's breasts have become sexualixed rather than seen for what they really are: a milk delivery system. There are lots of medical advantages to breastfeeding beyond the 6 months to a year tat is deemed typical in our society. Even the AAP (Ameican Academy of Pediatrics) recommends breastfeeding into the third year or for as long as mutually desirable by both mother and child,

I've heard that hard-core breast milk promoters will suggest around 5 or 6 years, but you would of course have the option of pumping (but then what, sending it to school in their lunch box?).
For a normal person though, that will depend on the person. I think I was fed until I got my first tooth, and if I can maintain it that long, that's what I plan to do with my baby-on-the-way (teeth and nipples just don't sound like a good combo).

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for at least a year and for as long after that as desired by both mother and baby. They also have studies showing health benefits for at least two full years.
Interestingly, there is also a lot of evidence that extended nursing has health benefits for mothers -- reduced breast and ovarian cancer rates, among others.
Personally, I don't want to nurse until my baby is 4, but in some countries, that's not so unusual.

I think that 4 is definately pushing the limit, but I think that 3 is perfectly fine. The time to wean is when one of the partners in the breastfeeding relationship (mom and child) no longer wants to participate. I think that most healthy, normal mother/child relationships would naturally wean before the child is 4.

According to La Leche breastfeeding should stop after 6 years old! Crazy, huh? But most women will only go as long as two years. I'm not that bold and intend to stop nursing and start weaning when my daughter turns 6 months next month.

I stopped when my daughter got her first tooth (about 12 months). Four years of breastfeeding....I think that is ridiculously too long. Ask the pediatrician, they'd know best.

WHO recommends that you breastfeed until one year and as long thereafter as is mutually desirable.
How long is too old to read bedtime stories? How long is too long to help your child wash their hair? Every child and every family is different and we must respect these differences.
