First, I think people who need help should get it!! Unfortunately, that is not how it has worked. Instead of adding a great service to the nation, welfare has become one of the greatest disservices in the history of the world. It has given people a false sense of entitlement which in turn has lead many people to simply live off of the government. It is not these people are not able human beings who can benefit our society, it is just much easier for some people to collect welfare, have more babies, collect more welfare, Repeat....
This highly upsets me because the theory of welfare is pure and people who need help should get it. The problem is welfare helps to breed people who need help, and as time goes the liability is increasing instead of decreasing. Does anyone agree it is time for welfare reform?

Liberalove,
I am actually a democrat, this unfortunately happens to be in issue wrapped up in democratic philosophy. Which I will reiterate, is a good idea, but has turned out to be a terrible practice.

Electric Bill,
How exactly would we know who is taking advantage and who is not- that makes it tough to crunch numbers.
Also, my point is the number of people who "NEED" welfare is increasing, because peolpe are not scared to make mistakes. With welfare the way it is, they know they always have US to fall back on.

I know a couple of people who are on welfare or who have been on welfare and only 1 in 10 takes advantage. Why then punish the 9? Who are hard working single mothers? Mothers who need welfare to supplement their income. Mothers who work 10 + hours a day? I'm assuming that you've never had to ask for help because you wouldn't be on the sidelines tiffing about it. How cruel some people can be to another they don't even know. My granny depends on welfare to help her buy groceries. How dare you put your uppity nose down at people who aren't as privileged as you! Lastly welfare feeds children. So what if that one is lazy and doesn't want to work, should their children go hungry and homeless? What would you have the state do? Put those children in foster care? That system is already full and they can't keep enough homes available. I'm sickened by the lack of humanity that these answers have. THE NEED FOR WELFARE IS GOING UP BECAUSE THE GAP BETWEEN THE RICH AND THE POOR IS GETTING BIGGER!

More people that could (should) be working will go on those utopian socialist programs hawked by the Demopcrats as the answer to poverty. That plan started in the late 60's, and has accomplished what? : A $7.00 cheeseburger that takes 30 seconds to make... and millions living in welfare ghettos, nice gangs, graffiti, drive-bys, what-ever….
Care of the indegent is NOT a partisan issue, it is a MORAL consideration, which can be accomplished by any political entity.

Welfare original intentions have been so for gone that a reform may be too little, too late. Welfare is a good idea but it's been misused so much that a new form of social service need to be put in place. It's a touph descision and I nowhere near qulified to even suggest a better program but the current system is in need of an overhaul.

I concur. The only thing I see welfare accomplishing is shrinking my paycheck due to taxes. My job puts me in contact with many illegal immigrants, who refuse to pay sales tax, work for cash, but they have a medicade card and their 5 kids get free lunches at school. One member of the family has a fake social security card and the whole gang gets frrebies at your and my expense

First off, welfare really doesnt help, it causes people to become lazy. All I see these days are a bunch of women getting pregnant for no reason at all just to collect a check. For one thing our state makes a person work 20 hours per week just to keep there check coming. I think those hours should go up and make them work 35 hours per week just to collect their check. It might just motivate their stupid a$$'s to just get their tubes tied and get a steady paying job. I am sick of paying my tax dollars to people that cant put the bottle down, or doing drugs, or getting pregnant because they can. GET A JOB!!!! I am tired of paying for your lazy a$$ that I can't even claim on my own taxes to support you!!!!

Absolutely, and I like how Michigan changed the policy. Michigan in the 1970s and 1980s was one of the easiest states to get welfare. Basically, you had no residency policy and it was based on household size.
Now, there is a work requirement and a time limit. Exceptions are made to this policy for extenuating circumstances, such as caring for someone who requires medical help, people with psychiatric illnesses, or people in school.
I personally agree with this policy. It's designed now to help people get off of the welfare system. If you don't want to work, there is a time limit of 5 years on the system. So, if you don't want to work, move to another state.
I wish I had the citation, but 70% of the people on welfare are on it for less than 3 years because it is being used by the majority to get them through a difficult time.
For instance, we do not get welfare but we get medical insurance for our kids. We cannot afford insurance, so at least this way, our kids can get help. I'm going to school, and when I get through school, I will hopefully find a job that offers health insurance.

MY thoughts are, Children should be cared for by their own mothers, Until they are at least in first grade. Before the mother is forced to go to work and her child or children be placed in daycare situations.
