IF the only point of being alive was having people care about you, then you would be absolutely right. And I'm sure there are plenty of advertisers who want you to believe that other people liking you is all that is important.
But that is quite simply not true.
I won't pretend that other people's opinions are not important to anybody, but let's put that aside for a moment and consider all the OTHER things that are important to people. It's easy to find these things, because they are things people do even though it sometimes makes them unpopular. They include: gaining knowledge, discovering and speaking the truth, promoting a cause, pursuit of excitement, finding religion, and many other things. In fact, it's not to hard to pick any one of these and find someone who would say that life would be completely pointless without that one thing (they'd be wrong too, but it just goes to show how important some of these things are to people).
So people don't care about you? Find something else. There's no short supply.
Or option B is just to find new people who DO care about you. Find a group that helps people down on their luck. Or just be nice to the cashier at the store. This last piece alone has made me famous at the store I go to because I treat cashiers as people instead of drones. And they don't even know my name.
And bottom line, you can MAKE people care about you if you really want them to. This is one of the oddities of human behaviour - sometimes people care about you when you demonstrate that you are completely unconcerned whether they do or not. This comes from confidence. And confidence comes from real worth. Worth can come from many of those other things:
Jump out of an airplane. Take a road trip without a map and see where you end up. Or just sit on a street corner and REALLY look at what happens. Find someone else who is ignored and pay attention to them. So much of the world passes by every day and most people are completely unaware of it. You don't have to be one of them.
When you KNOW that you are an interesting person, people will take an interest in you. And why shouldn't they? You ARE interesting!

It depends what your purpose is for living. If you want to receive attention from others, there is a principle involved - Whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them. You can find this primarily expressed by Jesus (Matt 7:12), and restated in numerous self-help books. But, perhaps, it is "purpose for living" that needs to be gained. You might start with the Gospel of John.

Because, as far as we know, being alive is better than the alternative. And I'm not in a hurry to find out if there's an afterlife and/or if it's better than this life.

First of all; it's your life, not theirs. That's what makes it worth living.
Second of all; screw them.

I think the answer should be what or who do you care about. Then if the answer is no, I'd ask why not.
