Usually, i'll just say "wow, now THIS is an awkward silence isn't it?"

I figure i might as well... ease the tension a bit.

Smile, wait, enjoy the silence.

Most times I'll try to ease the tension with a bit of wry humor, but when that fails & nothing seems to be working, I remind myself that communication is a two way street & it's not solely my responsibility to cover the awkward moments. Those times I'll be still and wait.

I'm not normal! lol. If there is an awkward silence I start entertaining myself. I fidget, dance, and other things of that nature. Usually kills the silence and gets the tight lipped person to start loosening up.

On our first date, after 30 minutes of no talking, just silverware clanking on the plates, my husband (then neighbor) let out this loud fart that I swear lasted 2 minutes
when I started laughing and quoted my family's motto,
"THE LOUDER, THE PROUDER!"
he jokingly proposed
he proposed for real a month later
We've been married 7 and a half years

I tend to stare off into space, then slowly turn to whoever it is that I'm talking to and smirk a little, looking at them out of the corner of my eye, and then I catch their eye and start getting lost there. I'm not really sure what happens after that, it all depends on the other person.

In my house, silence is a blessing. I just enjoy it for the 2 seconds it lasts, till my husband turns the TV on!

By relaxing. Reminds me of a guy who wanted to impress a studio head with his ' acting ' where there was no dialogue. The guy blew up on him and yelled;

" Don' t just do something, STAND THERE !!!!!! "

I do this little whistle thing and look around at everybody. Usually someone laughs and that breaks the silence.

I ask someone a pointed question, but one that I know will get things started, like what did 'tom' do over the weekend....
