I'm Canadian also,
I can tell u if u r poor in the states. u r 14x worse off then in Canada. I've read all the data. Not only are 14% better off in Canada u r not as demonized. Which is the biggest scam the wealthy have ever played. When u add up all welfare, retirement .workcomp, disabilaty. emploment insurance, etc. All government tranfer payments to the puplic, they add up to less then one half of one %.. Yet the way the states demonize welfare single moms, you would think they r shiftless and lazy, getting free ride off fed or state just having kids. Nothing could b further from truth. Some states give as little as $165.00 a MONTH. Most people could not support themself and child on that a week!
What they r not telling is Corperations get the most in welfare, and it is from the poor and middle class sweat, taxes.
Lockheed Martin, Haliburtin, Kellog Brown & Root, Boeing, The list is very long in fact 498 out of The Furtne 500 named would sink without government payments. So much for freemarckets. Thats for suckers without government money to play with. Puplic takes 100% risk Company gets 100% profit. Thats privitation.
Owning the media, and middle class findong it harder and harder to cope. Ruling class blame lazy (usualy black) on welfare. Racism is encouraged so people can blame backs, spics, who ever, as long as they do not unite and demand more fair wealth distribution.

I live in Maine and one problem that recently happened was that people were using their EBT cards (food stamps) to buy glass bottle milk that had a deposit on the bottles. They would take the bottles to the bathrooms or outside and dump all the milk then take the bottles back in to get their deposit back and put the money towards things like cigarettes and alcohol that EBT cards can't be used for. Stores had to put a limit on how much milk could be bought at once.
We also have a program here at least in Maine called WIC (Woman, Infants, Children) that provide food for children of low income families based on the child's age. They go by items, not dollar amounts and you can get things like milk, cereal (limits on what varieties you can get though), formula, eggs, etc. While I am not a fan of the welfare system (abused too much), I think this program is one of the better ones since it looks out for the children who can't control how lazy their parents are.
Another thing in Maine that disgusts me... if you are a alcoholic or a drug addict, you are able to collect disability.

Same in the US but the benefits aren't quite as good as they are in Canada so less people do it down here but the ones that are on it in the states, for the most part, just stay on it. They don't use it to "get back on their feet" if that's what you are asking.
"Food stamps" are a form of government assistance which work just like money but can only be used to buy certain things, primarily food and definitely not things like cigarettes and alcohol.

It's pretty much the same. You get money every month. Although now the USA doesn't use food stamps, we use EBT cards. It's awful because now people have the option of getting cash back and can use that to buy cigarettes, alcohol, drugs or whatever. It's rediculous.

Food Stamps are just a little added welfare to go along with Welfare Checks.
Democrats can give you the details. They know all the tricks to get hand-outs.
