At first it just moved around, never going above the speed I was actually going. This morning it was working fine. Now it won't work at all.

Your detail on this issue is staggering. Never have I seen so much detail. Wow it's amazing. First this is first. What’s the Year make and model of the car? 2nd, where there any noises coming from it before it quit working? 3rd how many miles are on the car? Are you miles still advancing even though the Speedo is not working? If it is a newer car it could be a number of different things. It could be a speed sensor that has gone bad. The gauge may have quit. You could have a lose connection at the back of the dash. A lot of the newer cars (95 on up) have done away with the Speedo cable and it's now all driving by sensors and electronics. If any part of this system fails the whole thing comes to an end. You will need to take it do a repair shop or the dealer to resolve the issue. Now if it is an older car it's quite simple to figure out. The older cars had the speedometer cables. They would break from time to time. You can get replacement cables from your local auto parts stores and they simply pull out of the transmission and the back of the dash then reinstall. If the cable has not broke then the gear inside the transmission may have come lose or has lost teeth on the gear (they are just plastic gears) If the gears are fine the you are left with the speedometer being your problem. Then you have to get a new Speedo. This will lower the value of the car do to the mileage no longer being accurate. Hope this helps, next time more information for better diagnose and less hassle.

It means it's broken. That all I can tell you since you didn't bother to give a year, make or model. It may or may not even have a speedometer cable. It may be the digital one that uses a speed sensor in the front wheel, but I don't know, nor does anyone else that is telling you it's your cable.

Sounds like you broke the cable. this is not a good thing because odometer replacement is the fix. That means your car becomes tmu or true miles unknown which hurts the value.
