Well, there is always a risk with anything you download. There are a lot of screwballs out there who just want to mess up your computer! Also, services like Limewire feature mostly illegal downloads. Music sharing, although it seems like fun, can not only screw up your computer... but you are breaking the law by using it.

The best free music, in my opinion, is from independent artists. They love to give away their music just so that people will hear it - and there are lots of great unsigned musicians out there. Some other websites also give away music from signed artists, just to give you a taste of their music.

There is a free download section on Amazon.com, which a lot of people don't even know about! Go to their music section and click on Free Downloads.

MP3.com used to be one of the best sites, but it was taken over and isn't much good anymore.

I have my free music links on my other computer, sorry. But do a Google (or Yahoo!) search for "free independent music" and you will find lots of them. These should all be pretty safe.

Have fun!

You can safely download anything from anywhere as long as you do this: After you download a file (song,etc..) go to the folder you saved it in and Rightclick the file and Click SCAN and let it check for viruses. If everything comes up okay, THEN you can Click on it to open it or play it. But, remember, if you don't scan it before you click on it and it has a virus, as soon as you click it, you've released the virus to wreck havok on your computer. But, if you make it a habit to ALWAYS scan BEFORE you open, then you will never ever get a virus from downloading. I haven't had a virus in almost 5 years!!!!!! Why? Because I don't want one so I scan first! :-) good luck and have fun

Without much risk: put a ton of awesome anti-virus software onto your computer
then d/l a more-safe-than-some-other-weird-sources music application, like Limewire or Bittorrent
There is still a risk that you'll get a virus, but it is a lot less than using ome random site without having any anti-virus software

You can never be sure of 100% safe downloads but if you have good internet security or anti spy ware you're usualy going to be safe, I've d/l music for a while without to much problem . I have downloaded infected files but my antivirus stopped it and killed it.

you could try www.bearshare.com or www.limewire.com
