We were not at war when the policies were set that slammed us into the red, sadly. It's a matter of a corrupt government that is controlled by special interest groups. Ask yourself this: if the energy and oil companies are reporting the greatest profits they have ever seen, why does our government continue to provide them with tax deferrals and outright payments in the form of subsidies? Just how much has Haliburton made in Iraq? And why haven't their cost over-runs, which go into the billions of dollars, been investigated? Then ask yourself what companies the current administration worked for and will return to when they are out of office. The connection becomes pretty clear. We are no longer a democracy but a corporate oligarchy. The citizens select which corporate representative will take power, not who represents them best.

No, it isn't just the result of the war -that hasn't added substantially to our debt. It's the current administrations overall policies, and porkbarrel spending on an unprecedented level in the last six years that have caused this.
If you examine the national debt under previous presidents, you'll see it went up under both George Bush Snr and George W Bush, but went down under Clinton. This belies the common belief that Republicans are fiscally responsible, and Democrats irresponsible.

It's called WAR!
It's not the first time the national debt has been the highest it's ever been. Everytime the U.S. has gone into a war, our national debt has skyrocketed. And each time, it has been labeled as having the highest debt. FDR made the national debt skyrocket when he chose to put America in WWII. LBJ made the national debt skyrocket when he chose to put America in Vietnam.
It's not a Dem or Repub issue... it's a war issue.
Top Ramen: I'm not addressing the necessity of the war. That obviously is a whole other issue. But, that wasn't the question the person posted. I happen to disagree with the war myself, but facts are facts, the enormous national debt is as a result of the war. If you wish to discuss the necessity of the war, then post a question about it.

No, but you are asking the wrong person! We are a "superpower" with BILLIONS of dollars going toward our military. I dont think that budget has been decreased since before WW2. The budget steadily increases while social programs at home get cut. This even happens when there is no war. That's why the last few administrations have gone looking for war. (ie Afganistan, Iraq). That's only my take on things.

When people who are elected to national office and yes Virginia it is all of them Democrats and Republicans spend more money than they take in we have a debt. Just like I would have if I did it. The difference is that so far we have been able to sell of enough pieces of our country to the Middle East and China pawn shop to stay afloat. When they decide we have noting left to pawn we will have a huge depression.

its called an unnecessary war.
i find it hilarious that just because bush decides to invade a country for nonexistant WMDs, the rightwing nuts can ignore spending and blow hundreds of billions.......and still lose the war.
