The number after the element symbols tells you how many are in one molecule.

H3 --> 3 Hydrogen atoms
P --> 1 Phosphorous atom (it's one, if there is no number...)
O4 --> 4 Oxygen atoms

Adding them up you have 8 atoms in a molecule of H3PO4

Another example, water is H2O (2 Hydrogen, 1 Oxygen), for a total of 3 atoms...
