I have to write a persuasive paragraph on the following question:
What should be the job of a scientist?
Pick one to argue:
a) Create more synthetic substances. Fore example: synthetic elements, genetically modified food
b) Study substances that naturally exist.

I pick natural substances, but have no idea what to write

This is one of those questions that can very easily go either way. . .heh. Most questions can.

One job of a scientist (depending on the field) it to study the world around them; in fact, that really is the original job of all scientists. Now that we have advanced far enough in our technological evolution, humanity is also able to study what its creates. For example, the discovery of new particles and such is something that could not have been accomplished up until rather recently in human history. Sure, the scientists of old could have discovered "new" elements, but after certain point there would be nothing left to discover by using the means available to them.

Let me be brief; science is meant to increase mankind's knowledge. After all the information that is naturally available on Earth is understand (for example, the elements on the periodic table are complete as far as Earth is concerned, and the new elements that are being found most likely would not occur naturally in the universe, and if so only for brief periods of time). So I would argue Choice A with the knowledge that certain aspects of Choice B are finished.

You should have pick A. It covers both areas. To create something synthetic you need to understand how natural substances exists.

Science is about pushing the envelope for the benefit of mankind. E.g. medicines, energy, transport.

What good is understanding how the world works if we are unable to apply this information to anything?

real wood is a natural substance and is now being reproduced by plastics and old milk cartoons. wood is good but has a short life span compared to the expensive replacement, public parks have allot of this stuff now because the old stuff to replace wood was concrete and you can see how colds the concrete park benches are and the way we use natural things to basically be cheaper
