Every night for the past few weeks I haven't been able to get a lot of sleep. Normally I will just lay in bed for hours. One time I fell asleep at 4am and I had to get up at 6:30am for school! During the week I normally won't get more then 6 hours of sleep and I can really feel it effecting me now. Does any1 have any suggestions on how I can fall asleep better and quicker without anyone knowing about my problem? Thanx!

Try melatonin.

It's very common for teenagers to get into a pattern where they're not sleepy at bedtime. This happened to my daughter...She'd finally get sleepy around 2 AM, and then be exhausted all day at school.

After doing some research, we gave her melatonin...Turns out it's one of the least addictive substances on earth, which made us feel better as parents!

She would take it about 30 minutes before bed time, and you could hardly get her up the stairs to bed by the time it hit her system. She took the melatonin for about a week, and then no longer needed it, because she was able to get her "regular" pattern back.

You can find melatonin in the vitamin section at your local drug store.

I'm not sure if you do this already, but I'm told that exercise is a great way to improve problems falling asleep and sleep quality. For me, I have to do it in the morning. . . if I do it too late in the evening I end up getting all hyped up. Sometimes I have a hard time turning my thoughts off at night. In these cases I would try not to do something too intellectually stimulating an hour before bed (so I don't practice my violin or talk to my friends on the internet late at night). For me, brainlessly watching tv helps before bed because it keeps me from thinking about all the random stuff that pops into your head when you're trying to relax (like what I need to do tomorrow, did I feed the fish today, etc). Try not to watch something that's really interesting (then your mind will get involved in the show), also you should know that it is not recommended to leave it on all night. . . studies show it affects REM sleep.

Other than changing your routine, you can try things like chamomile tea, melatonin supplements, or a harmless sleep-aid (like unisom--which is actually benadryl).

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

Well, what I do is count numbers; or listen to smooth jazz, the music is so soothing......it just clams me down, and I fee like I'm in a cloud!
