His saddle does NOT fit him. The rubbing was so bad it damaged deep into the skin. When the hair folicles regenerate, scarred areas grow back with white spots.

Get rid of the saddle and get him one that fits. A poor fitting saddle also causes pain and muscle wasting.

You probably aren't going to prevent the hair growing back white, and often horses don't even have to have a sore to go white. Just the pressure on their withers from a poor fitting saddle can cause spots to develop. I don't know the exact reason, but once it's done the color does not return. You might want to start looking for some good dyes or cover up products. I agree with Rosie to a point, as far as liking evidence that a horse can perform, but I'd rather see it entered in a class instead of just see that at least one time someone put a saddle on that did not fit! I like the way many breeds are starting to recognize vesatility and not specialization. It IS a step in the right direction.

The poorly fitting saddle did so much damage to the tissue covering his withers that the melanocytes (pigment cells) are damaged and can't produce pigment. If you look at a freeze branded horse, the brand grows back white for the same reason. Get a new saddle that fits asap before he gets fistulus withers.
