The PS2 service, itself, is free, unlike Microsoft's XBOX Live. However, there are some games that have a monthly fee to play much like World of Warcraft does for the PC.

The browser is free, but some games won't. Some multiplayer content and subscription-required games will cost something. Dumb, huh? Sony should have put a price on the online browser service as a whole instead, so the MP events and subscription games would be free.

No. In some of them all you have to do is verify an account so that you can play online. For example on socom 3 and socom:allied assaults you have to verify an account with a valid credit card so that you can play ranked games. you wont be charged anything though. But you can still play online even if you didnt verify an account.Hope this helps.
