Unless you are at the top of your profession then don't expect to make a fortune in journalism. In the UK the starting salary for a junior reporter on a local weekly newspaper in only about GBP 14,000 (US$26,000) per year. But having said that, I personally think the media is a geat place to work.
In terms of education, for me as someone who has recruited journalists, I look more at the character and enthusiasm than any academic achievements. Of course English is important, but so to is the ability to talk to people.
It is hard to break in to the profession so show how keen you are and get as much work expereince as you can. Write to editors and news editors and off to help them for a week. You'll get some useful experience for sure.
Good luck!
