I'm 5'3", 130 lbs, size 8.5 shoe, female, beginner. What size board should I get? Just going down runs, not park. One guy told me a 140, another told me 150. What is correct? Also, can you recommend a good beginner's board?

When you hold the board up to yourself the top should be between your chin and the tip of your nose.

Trixie, the length of board you want is based on more than two factors. It's Height, weight, type of board, and riding style. You need to ride rentals for a little while, then find what you want in a board based on what you really like about the sport, either new or used. I recommend a good pair of boots being more important than spending a ton on your first board.

Definitely go with a pretty small board. Closer to 140, although the old 'between chin and nose' rule of thumb doesn't really work. Your best bet is to go to a reputable shop where they can help you choose. Burton is a great brand, but if its your first board you don't need to spend a buttload of money.

snowboards are measured in centimeters
you want a board that comes to your nose or mouth when standing. 150 is too big for you.
begginers may want a shorter board, it makes carving a little easier.
i recommend Burton for a beginner although i ride a Salomon and love it.
good luck
