He lays around all day, seems to have trouble floating and seems to be blind. If he stops swimming, he sinks rather fast. He lunges at pellets violently many times before he catches them, and no longer reacts to my other fish or my finger/mirror. Is he just getting old? He is about a year now.

What I meant by other fish was we put the tanks next to each other so they can feel mores social. I read that it was good for them to do that because it made them primp and stuff like that.

1 year can be old depending on how long he spent in the bad conditions at the pet store in the little container, but if you treat him right and he has at least 3 gallons of water to himself, he should be able to live longer. Test your water, you should have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and less than 20 ppm nitrate. It kind of sounds like nitrite poisoning to me. If your levels are higher than they should be, you need to do 20% water changes daily until they are back down. I would also try putting 1 tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons of water in the aquarium to reduce any stress on him. It could be old age, but you need to eliminate other causes just in case.

The main issue is you're slowly killing your fish! Yours is the weaker one, so it's displaying signs faster, however they'll each die upfront, and lovely quickly. I would not hold a snail in a part gallon tank, allow by myself 2 Bettas! If you desire to hold them in a divided tank, get a ten gallon, or on the very least a five gallon, and have compatibility it with a divider. Bettas do satisfactory in five gallon tanks, however can manipulate in two.five gallon tanks. Which ever you select, it ought to be heated and feature a smooth filter out. If the water does not freely go with the flow via the divider, positioned a heater and filter out on every part. If the divider is obvious, positioned a few tall (truly or silk) crops alongside it so they do not ought to stare at every different always. Do no longer use plastic crops in Betta tanks! Make definite the water stage is low ample that they can not soar from one part to the opposite. Bettas are mighty jumpers! If you do that and participate in weekly water alterations of 20-25%, your Bettas will are living lengthy, healthful lives. A Betta can are living five years or extra if stored in well stipulations. Don't do that and Blondie most commonly would possibly not are living to look Christmas, and the opposite one will probably be long past earlier than spring! I can virtually assurance it! Get a few books and/or talk over with a few on-line boards approximately Bettas. and aquarium maintaining. You it sounds as if have plenty to be taught approximately those unusual fish.

Betta fish are a hardy specie's they come from south east Asia. They are found in rice paddies. They can get very big and colorful. The problem is you have him in with other fish that carry diseases and your fish got sick from one of the other species. You can check with any pet shop that sells fish about his condition and there may be a treatment for him. I used a small 5 gallon tank as my hospital tank for sick fish. You have to clean and sanitize it after each use. I think you may be able to save him if he is still eating. Put him in a small 1 or 2 gallon bowl change the water(Make sure it is the same temperature as the tank water-you may have to use a small heater to bring the temp up)Then you can treat him in there. After he is better don't put him back in the tank with the other fish. You may also have to treat the water in the tank he is in now so the other fish don't get sick. Check with the pet shop to see what is available for treating his condition. There are some books on fish diseases that you should be able to find either at the local library or at the pet shop. Look for the symptoms that he has in the book and follow the directions for the treatment...Good luck...

WAIT ! he could be sick...or constipated....you could try two things. feed him some vegitation for a few days, like a pea. If he is constipated the pea will clean him out- if you will. you could also try some mediflex. this is a medicine that will help him feel better if he is sick, and wont hurt him if he isnt. I have a male betta that wasnt acting him self, but i didnt really notice until he started getting a mark on his head, my point is, that he wouldnt react to his breeding partener, she would react to him- even chase him around when he got away from me- but i treated him and other healthy appearing fish with medflex and he pepped right up.... so give it a try! keep in mind bettas can last up to 2-3 years! you little buddy is still in his prime....good luck! P.S. check this site to be sure that something isnt wrong with him!

One thing to remember when you get bettas, there already old when you get them. I'm sorry to tell you this, but you fish is dieing. I could take up to months for him to finally finish his life. When mine start getting old like that I like to separate them from the rest of the tank...weither it is in a nursery or a separate tank, this gives them a break from the other fish so they can just relax and take it easy in their final days. Good luck and I'm sorry about the bad news.

sounds like he could have some type of water alergy. Could have an infection or virus. Call or go to a fish store tell them what is going on and they would be able to tell you more.

All beta lunge at food, so no worries there.
But it does sound like he is getting old. Mine behaved that way before he croaked.
