No one knows for sure. But odds are that some civilization did represent Atlantis at some time in the past. And that the ancient greeks did repeat the legend of this civilization as a warning to others. Also, as a play, it was a best seller (no kidding) so it was a very popular story to replay and talk about. Plato placed it beyond the Pillars of Hercules which is OUTSIDE the Mediterranean in the Atlantic, however, most scientist believe it originated in the Greek or Agean Sea when Thera (or Santorini) exploded destroying everything in a 50 mile radius (even the Island of Cypress).
Also, the Olmecs in South America at this time used "ATL" (ATLantis) in their city names to mean "of the Sea." So, perhaps when Plato mentioned in the Atlantic, he didn't know how far away in the Atlantic he was talking about.

Sylvia Browne's book Secrets & Mysteries touched on Atlantis and also Lemuria (another fabled lost continent.)
According to S.B.; Atlantis was just as technologicaly advanced if not more so than we are today. They used quartz crystal in various forms (or large quartz generators) to power vehicles and boats, similar to how we use radio and cell towers to transmit signals to remote and wireless gadgets.
Supposedly (and this is from a different source than Sylvia Browne) high priests and priestesses 'programmed' quartz points with information for keeping. In the metaphysical community these points are called 'record keepers' or sometimes 'master crystals'. A crystal that contains information bears certain types if physical 'markings' that other crystals don't. It's a telepathic form of information encoded in the crystal. I think there may be something to the fact that quartz can hold information because I've heard that it is used in computer circuit boards for memory purposes?
When Atlantis sank, there were survivors that made it to what is now Egypt; giving the Egyptians (or founding Egyptian culture entirely) what we consider to be advanced technology nowadays.
That is the lore that I've heard.

Nope Atlantis was all made up by Plato. He wanted to create a fantasy utopia and wrote about Atlantis from other myths and pushed it as being true. If you study continental drift it makes Atlantis impossible.
One Plato scholar put it like this..
"The continuing industry of discovering Atlantis illustrates the dangers of reading Plato. For he is clearly using what has become a standard device of fiction - stressing the historicity of an event (and the discovery of hitherto unknown authorities) as an indication that what follows is fiction. The idea is that we should use the story to examine our ideas of government and power. We have missed the point if instead of thinking about these issues we go off exploring the sea bed. The continuing misunderstanding of Plato as historian here enables us to see why his distrust of imaginative writing is sometimes justified."

Yes, I believe Atlantis was a real place. I believe that after the Flood, the Ice Age came and stored a lot of the Flood water in glaciers. South of the ice cap, those post-Flood people, who would have been very intelligent (not dumb cavemen), built a city on the (then dry) continental shelf. Eventually the ice age ended and rising ocean levels swamped the city. Today it is underwater.

i read this article about atlantis and think about this it may seem un real because we cant find it or have no proof, but think about this they say calif. will eventually break off from the us and sink under the ocean couldnt atlantis have been slowly sinking away and it was said to have been most likely located in the mediteranean. or what if it didn sink like they say maybe it just moved and has been named something else and know one knew. you cant trust everything a scientist says i mean we are man we dont know that everything we say is right. its like time something we made up. i believe you just have to be open to possiblities and believe what u think is right. dont always trust a scientist or a historian.

Alantis was o moral tale told by the greek philosipher socrates or plato not sure which about an island that overstepped the gods and thus was punished drastically. Although the story itself was a fiction work he based it on a real island just outside of crete. This island was completely destroyed by a volcano destroying the minoans that lived there as well as the ones who lived on crete. The whole minoan civilization was devasted. They were quite an advanced civilization for there time but nature won out.

If this place was true I have much more problems I was predicting before... Anyway I was shocked not so long time ago when I acidentaly find out that Hitler was trying to create one of genetical descenders. He believed Atlantis members were Scandynavian type. It was funny firstly, but... as I know human species if living in place lacking of sun (deep ocean bottom) in time of few generation will get white skin, because of mutations and genetical selection (sun light is needed for production of some hormon as I remember and white skin gives less protection from sun). Its only a theory, but I have too many other theories about Atlantyda. One theory is not a problem but so many are leading me to believe. Not only my theories I blame, but it is so much complicated and unpredictable that I think I will stop here. My life is worth nothing, but I am not going to risk life of someone innocent... better build your own world. You have future. Leave ghosts of past to rest when they are not asking to be found. Knowlege - take - it should be free to use for good purposes. Just be sure you dont hurt others to aquire it. When I think about what medical tests you would use on such poore fellow then I am not surprised you create such horroristic films about aliens. Those films just mirror your own potential cruelty. Humans... you emerged from animals in time of millions years but to become animal once again is just one step. I believe you understand. If not then watch "Dr. Moroe island" (I hope I write title well) and then try to understand. Sorry, but most of people fallow destruction and violence path. Not many listen to God teaching about creation, care, morality, respect to each other and any life...

I believe atlantis was a real place but it may not have been as mystical as all of the legends. From memory, they are groups of people who believe that they are decendents from survivors of Atlantis.

not been got here across - yet. although writings through Plato exhibits Atlantis did exist in his Age,(contained in the variety of an Island) only outside the Gates of Hercules, that can be the front to the Mediterranean sea. Very severe study is going on to this present day.

Yes it was a large island that sank in the Atlantic Ocean not far from the Straights of Gibraltar (formerly known as the "Gates of Heracles")
I don't think there were any spaceships or anything...
