I dont usually and am always catching people I hate when someone calls and says on the voice mail Hi this is um Jeff ~ That drives me crazy.

In conversation I don't say it very often at all, but when writing emails to friends or in IM, I use it a lot because the silence is more awkward for me without being able to see someone.

My sister laughs at me all the time because when i'm on the phone, i always say "but um..."
And it sounds like button but with a hint of stupidity.
