They're trying to figure out who you are! And it's tough! Heck, I'm sitting here answering your question and I don't even know who you are.

Pretend I am the person staring at the stranger as I am drinking my fourth cup of coffee with the gang at the same place every Wednesday and Friday!

"Whoa... stranger in town! Why in the name of our heavenly father did he pick THIS place? I mean really....we ALL know the coffee is okay, but if ya go down the road another five miles, that's where the REAL good fixins are. Take a look around ya boy.... ya see anyone with a plate of food? no... un huh no one... we don't eat here... we drink the coffee. C'mon now... figger it out! GO down the road... ya poor sucker. Well... if you're staying.... do NOT eat the chicken.... don't know how long it's been that fridge."

Probably because since they're from small towns, they're kind of surprised to see a stranger walk in. They're used to at least recognizing by face if not by name the people they see around town. I doubt they mean anything bad by it.
