There are so many different things that can cause the pain that you are describing, anything from a pulled muscle to separated ribs. Hernia's in the chest are not common at all. That does not mean they can not happen, but are very uncommon. Most hernia's happen in the abdominal area. A hernia is the weakening of the muscle wall that allows an organ, tissue or other body part to protrude through the muscle wall.

The muscle tissue can become separated from the ribs from something as simple as a hard sneeze. The pain will be come obvious with deep breaths, coughs, sneezes, twisting, bending or any other movement that causes you to move that area of the ribs. If you are concerned that it is something worse, go see your doctor.

My sister has been worried about the same symptoms, she also used to be a heavy smoker, and our father also has a herniated disk.

Apparently only a surgeon can treat a hernia if that's what you have.
