Steve Miller was taught by Jerry Garcia when he was younger, & look how famous his career is now.

He's easilly one of the greatest guitarists of the 70s, in my opinion.

He's AWESOME live!

Oh, & while Jimmy Page was essentially self-taught, he did recieve a few pointers from a family friend when he first began, mostly just tuning & reading chords, though.

I'd say it depends on your levels of natural talent and personal motivation. Most folks read tab these days; it is relatively easy to figure out. Just buy a tablature book (at a music store)...the instructions are in the front of the book. But even better is to check online; there are a gazillion tab sites out there. Make sure you buy or download tabs to music you've already heard. Apply your fingers to the right stings at the right frets and strum or pick as appropriate. NOW if what you are playing doesn't sound right...even after you've practiced ALOT. Go get some lessons...you'll know when you've had enough lessons. I wouldn't sign a contract with a teacher...just get some introduction to the guitar. I'm talking too much..ha ha! Live well. Play well.

A teacher can take you so far. Helpful in learning music theory (which you should know if you want to be any good). I'd say find a good teacher (ask around) based on your short-term goals (hopefully it's not to learn how to play "Stairway to Heaven")....then stick with that teacher as long as you feel like you are learning. At some point you will just have to learn to fly on your own and discover things for yourself. Also, find some DVDs on eBay.....not the "Learn Guitar Overnight" ones - but if you find a guitarist that you admire, and you've got some decent skills under your belt, see if he/she has an instructional DVD out. My husband has been a professional musician and teacher for almost 20 years, and he STILL feels like he has plenty to learn (judging by the 200+ music DVDs he has accumulated). Rule of thumb: The moment you think you know it all is when it's time for you to quit.

You can usually get very much better with the assitance of a teacher, especially compared to no assistance.
