i've only seen two types of masking tape- the first is the beige colored which has always been around - the second is the blue colored tape - both can be found in the painting section of a lowes or homedepot- however it sounds like you may be looking for electrical tape and they can probably be found at lowes or home depot in the electrical or hardware departments

If you have the time, check out Blick's Art Supply. I remember seeing an art project on that site that used various colors and sizes of masking tape. Pretty cool project, now that I think about it.
