assuming that you're looking for a game, i'll have to divide it by system...
---------
nintendo.

people say that zelda was great. oh, yea, i liked it well enough, but it's not really an rpg, it's an action rpg. the best thing about zelda is that it hasn't lost the charm that you get when there are actual puzzles to solve

dragon warrior III and IV were both great.
---------
sega.

that tactical game shining force II was ok, but that's a strat game, not an rpg.

phantasy star IV was the best of the phantasy star series. none of this card stuff you got going on in later games.
---------
super nintendo. lots of great gems on this system.

super mario RPG. Lufia 1 was just ok, but lufia II was arguably among the top three rpgs for this system... which is saying a LOT. you don't want final fantasy 2(4) or 3(6) listed. chrono trigger is a mix of rpg and action rpg - only a hint of action genre. earthbound was in here, but i didn't personally like it. secret of mana was ok, but i accidently beat it. i had no clue i was at the end of the game, i thought that was a minor boss. illusion of gaia is sort of like an action rpg, much like a fellow contender, zelda: link to the past. secret of evermore was also pretty fun. breath of fire II was decent, but III was the gem.
--------
N64

paper mario

ogre battle 64 is more of a strat game, but it was quite fun.
--------
playstation (2 listed here as well)

xenogears, you should hear a lot of. i don't like the battle system. xenosaga is boring.

ogre battle march of the black queen. hard to find. not an rpg, more of a strat, but very fun - a battle can easily last an hour and a half

the nippon ichi games (rhapsody, la pucelle, disgaea, phantom brave, makai, disgaea II) are not rpgs, they are strat games, but they are quite fun

breath of fire IV wasn't the best BoF, but everything after this title was downhill.
-------
gamecube

paper mario II: thousand year door.

there is the zelda's collectors disc, and windwaker was excellent. these are action rpgs, but are still favorites among rpg players.
--------
gameboy/ DS

pokemon series is actually quite a good series, decently balanced, it's rather surprising.

i like harvest moon games, and they are life simulations, so i guess they can be called rpgs.

sword of mana is kind of like a remake of seiken densetsu (final fantasy adventure for gameboy - NOT actually a final fantasy game, they just used the name for sales.)

do not get lufia for the gameboy. your welcome.

golden sun games were very nice, especially when they first came out with the gba, showing us a glimpse of how much better gameboy advance games can look over predecessors. i believe you can find them used for like 5 bucks (least they were last time i saw them, three days ago)

mario partners in time is also very fun

For what game platform?
I'm a big fan of the Suikoden series for the Playstation, Dungeon Siege on the PC, the Zelda games for N64, and the Lufia series on the SNES.

For ps2 I like both Kingdon hearts, the Suikoden series, and I'm a big fan of Star Ocean. Disgaea is cool, and Dragon quest was fun sometimes.

And yeah, Pokemon is crack, once you get into it. One long driving trip and I was hooked!

celebrity Ocean grew to become into solid gameplay clever, yet lacked intensity. dark Chronicle grew to become into spectacular!! Shadow Hearts: Covenant grew to become into super, yet would desire to be problematic to get now, From the hot international (the main present day) isn't too solid. Rogue Galaxy grew to become right into a nother Squeenix call, its ok, yet nonetheless feels a sprint rushed, no character intensity. solid RPGS ar ahrd to come back by ability of, Dragon Quest VIII grew to become into good enouugh, somewhat reptitive as RPGs go nevertheless.
