The jackalope — also called an antelabbit, horny bunny, aunt benny, or stagbunny — was (and to some extent still is) essentially a cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope (hence the name), but crosses with a goat, or deer, have also occurred. Nevertheless, the jackalope was usually portrayed in early cave paintings as a rabbit with antelope like antlers.

Some of the descriptions and portrayals of jackalopes were inspired by sightings of rabbits infected with what we now know to be the Shope papillomavirus, which causes the growth of horn-and antler-like tumors in various places on the rabbit's head and body. Photographs of these animals have been mistakenly presented as those of the real thing - and unfortunately any actual jackalope photos have long since been lost.
Due to their hybridized nature, jackalopes have become quite rare, although vestiges of that "species" remain in the wild. They are considered by hunters as almost the ultimate in prey, due to their unusual intelligence; some persist in saying there was a bit of bestiality involved in the propagation of that 'species" back in the distant past as well - it may have had something to do with primitive pubescent rites of initiation.

The jackalope is often confused with a common southwestern species of jackrabbit called the antelope jackrabbit, because of its ability to run quickly like an antelope; and some say vestiges of horns have been found in some of these specimens as well.
Clearly, nature is ever changing, and while the jackalope has also changed a lot with time, it's progeny have not yet become extinct.

This article is about the folkloric animal. For the Canadian band, see Jakalope.
The jackalope — also called an antelabbit, horny bunny, aunt benny, or stagbunny — in folklore is said to be a cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope (hence the name), goat, or deer, and is usually portrayed as a rabbit with antlers. Some believe that the tales of jackalopes were inspired by sightings of rabbits infected with the Shope papillomavirus, which causes the growth of horn- and antler-like tumors in various places on the rabbit's head and body.[1]. On the other hand, the human imagination has often delighted in creating composites made from two or more animals (such as the griffin and chimera), and does not really need a logical reason to do so. One common southwestern species of jackrabbit is called the antelope jackrabbit, because of its ability to run quickly like an antelope; it would have been easy enough to imagine instead (for comic effect) that this jackrabbit had the horns of an antelope.

Jackalopes are very dangerous. Never approach one in the wild.

Oh- and whatever you do, don't hit one with your car - the insurance companies refuse to pay for jackalops collisions.
