The beloved of grey-eyed Athena, he was the only one of his expedition to get home. It would be as bad as being on the security team on the original Star Trek; you'd know you were doomed, you just wouldn't know when. Or which monster would get you, for that matter.

Odysseus is the one who thought of the Trojan Horse, so he is very crafty. That's a good quality to have in a leader, however, his judgment in other matters was not that great.
